Introduction

Displacement uproots more than homes—it often uproots identities, livelihoods, and hope. In South Sudan, millions of people are refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), or returnees, trying to pick up the pieces after conflict. Founded by people who know these struggles personally, Luckista Unite South Sudan works to restore not just stability, but opportunity.

The Humanitarian & Economic Landscape

  • In many IDP or refugee camps, there is limited access to markets, capital, or consistent income.

  • Host communities often share the burden without proportional support, causing tension.

  • Returnees face reintegration challenges—loss of property, social disruption, limited job opportunities.

Luckista Unite’s Approach

  • Vocational training & entrepreneurship: equipping youth and women with market-relevant skills—e.g., tailoring, agribusiness, trades.

  • Financial literacy & startup support: small grants or seed capital, training in saving, credit, budgeting.

  • Community inclusion programs that bring together displaced and host community members for dialogue, shared projects, social cohesion.

  • Life skills & psychosocial support, recognizing trauma and the importance of mental health.

Examples of Impact

  • A refugee returnee who used seed-funding to start a small poultry business, generating regular income.

  • Youth in a host community trained in trade skills who employ their peers.

  • Women in displacement settings given business training and supplies to produce and sell crafts or food items.

Overcoming Barriers

  • Lack of infrastructure such as reliable water, roads, electricity.

  • Cultural and gender restrictions that limit women’s mobility or business participation.

  • Instability and safety concerns that interrupt schooling, markets, or access to resources.

  • Funding constraints and limited donor-funded programmes.

Why Luckista’s Work Is Essential

  • Helps displaced people become self-reliant instead of remaining dependent on aid.

  • Builds stronger host communities by reducing friction and creating shared prosperity.

  • Contributes to long-term peace by giving people reason to invest in their communities.

Call to Action

  • Support a specific project (shop, tool kits, equipment).

  • Mentor or train youth/women in your area.

  • Advocate with government or donors for policies supporting returnees, host integration.
