How Youth-Led Initiatives Are Transforming South Sudan’s Future
Discover how Luckista Unite is empowering youth and women among refugees, IDPs, returnees, and host communities in South Sudan through skills training, social inclusion, and economic opportunities.
Introduction
South Sudan is one of the youngest countries in the world, with a population where youth make up a large proportion. Yet, conflict, displacement, and economic instability have made pathways to stability and opportunity difficult. Luckista Unite South Sudan was founded by people who understand this firsthand—current and former refugees committed to creating change. Our mission? To advance social and economic empowerment for youth and women, while meeting humanitarian needs across displaced and host communities.
The Challenge Youth Face in South Sudan
Limited access to education and training due to conflict, displacement, and infrastructural issues.
High unemployment and underemployment: even when youth have some skills, market opportunities are small or disconnected. (Relate to “Youth Empowerment & Employability Project” by South Sudan Ministry + UNDP) Ministry of Labour+1
Gender biases and cultural barriers for women and girls around leadership, livelihood options, safety. UN Women projects show this remains a hurdle. UN Women Africa
Humanitarian needs: for refugees, IDPs, returnees, everyday survival is a challenge—shelter, food, health, basic services.
What Luckista Unite Does Differently
Rooted in experience: Founded by refugees, we understand both the trauma and the resilience of displaced communities.
Comprehensive focus: Not only economic empowerment (skills, livelihoods, entrepreneurship) but also social issues—gender inclusion, community cohesion, mental health.
Targeted support for refugees, IDPs, returnees, and hosts: Ensuring no one is left behind, whether asylum seekers or local communities hosting them.
Youth and women at the centre: Developing programmes that build leadership, financial literacy, capacity, mentorship, and peer support.
Case Studies & Success Stories
Skills training for women: how a group of young women trained in tailoring or soap-making were able to earn income, support their families, and gain confidence.
Youth leadership & peacebuilding: displaced young people from different communities brought together to resolve conflicts, build dialogue, or engage in community decision-making.
Livelihood projects for returnees: returnees establish small businesses with support (loans, tools, training), enabling reintegration.
Why It Matters
Social stability: Empowered youth & women are less likely to be marginalized, reducing conflict and building stronger communities.
Economic growth: Even small businesses or vocational skills create ripple effects—local markets, jobs, supply chains.
Human dignity & agency: Empowerment matters not just in survival, but in restoring hope, self-respect, and voice.
